Die linke Satzperipherie im Polnischen aus der Perspektive der generativen Grammatik

Joanna Leszkowicz

In my paper “The left periphery in Polish from the perspective of the generative grammar” I examined the phenomenon of multiple occupation of the left field. The fact that in the left field multiple constituents occur entails that the classical CP system is not sufficient for a description and analysis of the Polish sentence. Within the framework of the discussion about the applicability of Rizzi’s model to Polish, it was argued that a limited split-up of CP should be admitted. My analysis is based on the acceptance of two functional projections, namely that of Force Phrase and the Fin Phrase. In comparison to Italian, where special foci and topic positions are projected, these are not necessary in Polish. I argued that they either take the position of the Specifier of Mood Phrase, or located below the Fin Phrase.
